Don't drink' water advisory lifted in Salem
http://katu.com/news/local/dont-drink-water-advisory-lifted-in-salem
SALEM, Ore.
The City of Salem announced Saturday that a days-long 'don't drink' water advisory has been lifted.
Officials say new test results showed that toxins are below dangerous levels and the water is safe for all to drink.
The recent samples were collected on Wednesday, May 30, and Thursday, May 31.
The city says it will continue to collect water samples to make sure it remains clean,
and will work on new approaches to the Salem water infrastructure to secure safe drinking water in the future.
Health officials recommend people flush their cold water lines in the bathtub and shower until the
water runs cool to the touch to get rid of any residual contaminated water.

nitrates may be carried by rain, irrigation and other surface waters through the soil into ground water.
Human and animal wastes can also contribute to nitrate contamination of ground water. In Benton and Franklin Counties,
agricultural practices have been linked to elevated levels of nitrates in drinking water

Boil water advisories are currently in place in portions of the following counties: Bladen, Carteret, Chatham,
Chowan, Columbus, Cumberland, Currituck, Duplin, Franklin, Hertford, Hoke, Johnston, Lenoir, New Hanover, Pender,
Robeson, Sampson, Wake, Wayne and Wilson. The latest information on water systems is available here.

There are currently only two areas of Chowan county under the advisory.
The two areas include Yellowhammer Road, Morris Town Road, Chambers Ferry Road and Morris Lane.

Unknown to most Americans, a surprising number of U.S. cities have drinking water with unhealthy levels of chemicals and contaminants.
In fact, some organizations and state environmental agencies that collect and analyze water data say the level of chemicals
in some Americans' drinking water not only exceeds recommended health guideline but the pollutants even exceed
the limits set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the national legal authority in these matters.

Study: High levels of toxic chemicals in drinking water of 6 million Americans
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/toxic-chemicals-in-drinking-water-6-million-americans/
.
More than 6 million Americans are drinking water laced with unsafe levels of chemicals linked with cancer and other illnesses, a new report indicates.
Researchers from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering
and Applied Sciences found that levels of a certain class of chemicals -- called polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl substances,
or PFASs -- are above what's recommended by the federal government in many public drinking water sources.
